A new type of AI system could prevent countless road deaths - an Austrian company is leading the way
It often only takes a quick glance at a mobile phone or a second’s sleep – and a car crashes into a roadworks site at more than 100 km/h. On Germany’s motorways alone, such accidents occur on average once a week. The consequences are usually devastating: the roadworks vehicles are damaged and, in the worst cases, there are injuries and fatalities. Motorway maintenance crews, roadside assistants, police and firefighters work to ensure safety every day – but their work is massively jeopardised by inattentive driver behaviour.
A new type of AI system could now significantly reduce these dangers. The ‘CollisionEye®’ from the Lower Austrian company EYYES warns workers and emergency services at danger points in good time if a car or lorry is speeding towards them without braking. The solution has been intensively tested on German motorways and has now been awarded the prestigious German VisionZero Award 2024, which was once launched by the German Road Safety Council (DVR). The award honours outstanding projects that make a special contribution to reducing road accidents with ambitious safety measures.
Artificial intelligence and real-time environment analysis
The ‘CollisionEye®’ is an intelligent warning system that warns emergency services in real time when vehicles are approaching dangerously. As soon as an emergency vehicle stops, the system uses a camera to create a virtual safety corridor behind the vehicle. The AI analyses the surroundings in real time, identifies sources of danger and calculates potential collisions. Acoustic, visual and mobile radio alarms are only triggered in the event of actual danger. This allows emergency services to get to safety in good time – because every second counts. With its state-of-the-art technology, the system sets new standards in road safety and is considered the state of the art in the field of AI-based accident detection and prevention.
